Xanadu
Directed by Robert Greenwald, Xanadu (1980) is a musical fantasy film starring Olivia Newton-John as Kira, one of the nine Muses of Greek mythology who descends to 1980s Los Angeles to inspire a struggling artist (Michael Beck) and a retired big-band musician (Gene Kelly, in his final film appearance) to open a roller disco together. Dismissed by critics on release, the film has since become a beloved cult classic, cherished for its extravagant Electric Light Orchestra and Olivia Newton-John soundtrack, its unabashed commitment to the excesses of the era, and — above all — its rink.
The film's most iconic location, the roller disco "Xanadu" itself, was the Pan-Pacific Auditorium — one of Los Angeles's great pieces of Streamline Moderne architecture — which no longer exists.

The roller disco "Xanadu" was the Pan-Pacific Auditorium, a magnificent Streamline Moderne building at 7600 Beverly Boulevard in Los Angeles's Fairfax district. Built in 1935, the auditorium — with its soaring fins and futuristic facade — was one of the city's architectural landmarks. Tragically, after years of vacancy and decay, it was gutted by fire in 1989. Despite hopes that the iconic facade might be incorporated into a new structure, the remains were demolished in the early 1990s. A small park now occupies the site. Map Location
