Directed by Rob Cohen, XXX (2002) is an action thriller that explicitly positions itself as a 21st-century alternative to the traditional spy film — specifically James Bond — by replacing the tuxedoed secret agent with Xander Cage (Vin Diesel), an extreme sports star and underground provocateur who is reluctantly conscripted as a spy by NSA agent Gibbons (Samuel L.
