10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

Directed by Gil Junger, 10 Things I Hate About You (1999) is a modernized retelling of William Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew, set in a late-90s American high school. The plot follows new student Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) who falls for the popular Bianca Stratford. However, Bianca is forbidden from dating until her ill-tempered older sister, Kat (Julia Stiles), does. To solve this, Cameron bribes mysterious "bad boy" Patrick Verona (Heath Ledger) to woo Kat.

The film is a beloved cult classic, noted for its sharp wit, iconic soundtrack, and for launching the careers of its young lead actors.

Locations

The film was shot almost entirely on location in Seattle and Tacoma, Washington, giving it a distinct Pacific Northwest aesthetic that differs from typical Southern California teen movies.

Stadium High School, Tacoma

Perhaps the most famous location in the film, the fictional "Padua High" is actually Stadium High School. Originally intended to be a luxury hotel in the late 19th century before being converted into a school, its French Château-style architecture and massive stadium bowl provided the backdrop for Patrick’s iconic "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" serenade. The Stratford House, Tacoma

The beautiful Victorian home where Kat and Bianca live with their father is located at 2715 North Junett Street in Tacoma. The house, overlooking Commencement Bay, remains a private residence but is a frequent stop for fans of the film. Map Location

Gas Works Park, Seattle

The scene where Kat and Patrick play paintball (resulting in their first kiss) was filmed at Gas Works Park on the north shore of Lake Union. The rusted remains of the former gasification plant provide a striking industrial backdrop against the Seattle skyline. Map Location

Fremont Troll, Seattle

Cameron and Bianca are seen walking past the Fremont Troll, a massive concrete sculpture clutching a real Volkswagen Beetle located under the Aurora Bridge. It is one of Seattle's most famous public art installations. Map Location

Paramount Theatre, Seattle

The opulent "Prom" sequence at the end of the film was filmed inside the historic Paramount Theatre in downtown Seattle. The venue’s grand lobby and ornate ballroom perfectly suited the high-stakes drama of the film's finale. Map Location
