28 Days Later

Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, 28 Days Later (2002) revitalized the zombie genre with its introduction of the "fast-running" infected. The film follows Jim (Cillian Murphy), a bicycle courier who wakes up from a coma in a deserted London hospital 28 days after a highly contagious, aggression-inducing virus called "Rage" has decimated the population. Jim joins forces with a small group of survivors to navigate a landscape of urban desolation and military collapse.

The film is celebrated for its haunting cinematography, captured on low-resolution digital video to emphasize its gritty, immediate feel, and its terrifyingly plausible depiction of societal breakdown. It is widely considered one of the most influential horror films of the 21st century.

Locations

The production is famous for its opening sequences of an empty London, achieved by filming at dawn for very brief intervals to capture the city's most iconic landmarks without traffic or pedestrians.

Westminster Bridge, London

The film’s most iconic image features Jim walking across a completely deserted Westminster Bridge. To achieve this, the police halted traffic for just minutes at a time at sunrise. In the background, the Houses of Parliament and Big Ben stand silent, emphasizing the absolute scale of the catastrophe. Map Location

Piccadilly Circus, London

Another striking sequence showing the abandonment of modern civilization was filmed at Piccadilly Circus. Usually one of the busiest hubs in the world, the sight of the giant neon advertisements glowing over a littered, empty plaza remains one of the film's most haunting visual achievements. St. Thomas' Hospital, Lambeth

The hospital where Jim wakes up is the real St. Thomas' Hospital, located directly across the river from the Houses of Parliament. The production utilized the hospital's actual corridors and loading bays to ground the film's opening in a chillingly familiar reality. Map Location

Trellick Tower, North Kensington

The high-rise apartment block where Jim and Selena (Naomi Harris) meet Frank (Brendan Gleeson) and his daughter Hannah is the famous Grade II listed Trellick Tower. This Brutalist landmark provided the perfect fortress-like setting for the survivors to hide above the chaos of the streets. Map Location

Waverley Abbey, Surrey

As the group travels north toward a supposed military sanctuary, they stop to rest among the ruins of Waverley Abbey. These 12th-century ruins provide a brief, ethereal moment of peace and beauty that contrasts sharply with the violence of the infected and the desolation of the cities. Map Location

Trafalgar Park, Wiltshire

The grand country estate used as the military headquarters for Major Henry West (Christopher Eccleston) and his soldiers is Trafalgar Park in Salisbury. The juxtaposition of the elegant 18th-century architecture with the brutal reality of the soldiers' "protection" underscores the film’s themes of the thin line between civilization and savagery.
