28 Years Later

Directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, 28 Years Later (2025) marks the highly anticipated return of the franchise that redefined the zombie genre. Serving as a direct sequel to the events of 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, the film explores a world that has been fundamentally reshaped nearly three decades after the initial outbreak of the Rage Virus.

Original star Cillian Murphy returns to the franchise, joined by an ensemble cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Jodie Comer, and Ralph Fiennes. The film is the first in a planned new trilogy, aiming to capture the same raw, visceral energy of the original while expanding the scope of a society living in the long-term shadow of a global pandemic.

Locations

Production for 28 Years Later moved to the rugged and atmospheric landscapes of Northern England, utilizing the dramatic terrain to represent a world reclaimed by nature and fractured into isolated communities.

Northumberland, England

A significant portion of the film was shot across Northumberland, known for its vast moorlands and ancient castles. The production utilized the area's isolation to depict the remnants of human civilization. Locations such as the Cheviot Hills provided the backdrop for the survivors' journey through a landscape that is both beautiful and treacherous. Map Location

Holy Island (Lindisfarne), Northumberland

The historic and tidal Holy Island of Lindisfarne served as a major filming site. Its unique geography—connected to the mainland by a causeway that is submerged twice a day—provided a powerful metaphor for the isolation and fragile safety of the characters. The ancient ruins of the priory and the castle atop the hill offer a stark, "end-of-the-world" aesthetic. Map Location

Rothbury, Northumberland

The village of Rothbury and the surrounding Simonside Hills were used for several sequences involving the tactical movements of the survivors. The dense woodlands and rocky outcrops provided a claustrophobic setting for encounters with the infected, maintaining the high-tension atmosphere established in the earlier films. Map Location

Newcastle upon Tyne

While much of the film is set in the wilderness, the production also utilized parts of Newcastle to represent the decaying remains of northern urban centers. The city's industrial bridges and historic quayside were transformed to show thirty years of neglect and the collapse of modern infrastructure. Map Location

Kielder Water & Forest Park

The vast Kielder Forest served as the setting for the nomadic groups navigating the "wilds" of Britain. The production took advantage of the massive scale of the forest to emphasize how much the natural world has encroached upon what was once a highly developed nation. Map Location

British Virgin Islands (Second Unit)

In contrast to the rain-swept moors of England, second-unit filming reportedly took place in the British Virgin Islands. These locations are speculated to represent the global perspective of the virus or perhaps the elusive "safe zones" often mentioned in the series' lore.
