1408

Directed by Mikael Håfström, 1408 (2007) is a psychological horror film based on Stephen King's short story of the same name. John Cusack stars as Mike Enslin, a cynical author who specializes in debunking paranormal phenomena. His skepticism is put to the ultimate test when he checks into the notorious room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel in New York City, a room that the manager, Gerald Olin (Samuel L. Jackson), warns has a long and deadly history.

The film is highly regarded for its atmosphere of escalating dread and Enslin's harrowing descent into a surreal, shifting nightmare where the room itself becomes his greatest adversary.

Locations

Although the film is set in New York City, much of the production took place in the United Kingdom, utilizing historic London buildings and soundstages to recreate the claustrophobic interiors of the Dolphin Hotel.

The Roosevelt Hotel, New York City

The exterior of the fictional Dolphin Hotel is actually the Roosevelt Hotel at 45 East 45th Street in Midtown Manhattan. Its classic grand facade provided the perfect "old-world" New York look for a hotel with a dark, hidden past. Map Location

Reform Club, Pall Mall, London

The opulent lobby of the Dolphin Hotel, where Mike Enslin first meets the manager Gerald Olin, was filmed at the Reform Club in London. This private members' club is famous for its grand Victorian architecture and has appeared in numerous films, including Paddington and Quantum of Solace. Map Location

Elstree Studios, Hertfordshire

The interior of room 1408 itself was a series of complex, shifting sets built at Elstree Studios. Because the room undergoes various transformations—including flooding, freezing, and crumbling—the production required a controlled environment to execute the elaborate practical effects and stunts. Hermosa Beach, California

The flashback sequences involving Mike Enslin’s surfing life and the tragic memories of his daughter were filmed at Hermosa Beach in Los Angeles. These sun-drenched, open locations serve as a sharp visual contrast to the dark, confined spaces of the hotel room. Map Location

Pinewood Studios, Buckinghamshire

Additional underwater sequences and large-scale practical effects were handled at the famous Pinewood Studios, utilizing their specialized water tanks to film the scenes where the room is engulfed by a tidal wave. Map Location
