Appearance
50 First Dates
Directed by Peter Segal, 50 First Dates (2004) is a heartfelt romantic comedy that reunites Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore following their success in The Wedding Singer. Sandler stars as Henry Roth, a veterinarian at Sea Life Park in Hawaii and a notorious womanizer who falls for Lucy Whitmore (Barrymore). However, Henry soon discovers that Lucy suffers from short-term memory loss due to a past car accident, causing her to forget him every single night.
To win her heart, Henry must find creative ways to make her fall in love with him all over again, every single day. The film is beloved for its tropical setting, its blend of slapstick humor and genuine emotion, and its memorable supporting cast, including Rob Schneider and Sean Astin.
Locations
The production was filmed almost entirely on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, showcasing the lush landscapes and coastal beauty of the Windward Coast and North Shore.
Hukilau Cafe (Kualoa Ranch), Oahu
The iconic "Hukilau Cafe," where Henry and Lucy meet for the first time and where Henry builds waffle houses to get her attention, was a set constructed at Kualoa Ranch. While there is a real Hukilau Cafe in Laie, the movie used the stunning backdrop of the Kaʻaʻawa Valley to capture the quintessential rural Hawaiian feel. Map Location
Sea Life Park Hawaii, Waimanalo
Henry’s place of employment is the real Sea Life Park Hawaii. The park’s tanks and animal enclosures were used for the scenes involving Henry’s walrus and penguin friends. The location offers breathtaking views of Makapuʻu Beach and the Pacific Ocean, which are prominently featured throughout the film. Map Location
Kaneohe Bay, Oahu
Many of the sailing sequences, including Henry’s attempts to "break down" his boat or stage "accidents" to meet Lucy on her drive home, were filmed in and around Kaneohe Bay. The calm, turquoise waters and the distinctive silhouette of Chinaman’s Hat (Mokoliʻi) are frequently visible in the background. Map Location
The Whitmore House (Kualoa Regional Park)
The charming, isolated home where Lucy lives with her father (Blake Clark) and brother Doug (Sean Astin) was filmed on a private estate near Kualoa Regional Park. The location’s proximity to the mountains and the sea emphasized the family's protective, secluded lifestyle as they maintain Lucy's daily routine. Map Location
Halona Blowhole & Cove
The scenic road where Lucy’s car "breaks down" and where she is seen painting by the side of the road is the highway passing by the Halona Blowhole. This area is one of the most photographed spots on Oahu and serves as the backdrop for the various ways Henry tries to intercept Lucy during her daily commute. Map Location
Dillingham Airfield, North Shore
The ending of the film features a transition to a much colder climate, but the "Arctic" research vessel scenes were actually filmed near Dillingham Airfield and the surrounding coastline on the North Shore of Oahu. Clever camera angles and production design were used to simulate the frigid destination of Henry’s dream voyage. Map Location
