28 Weeks Later

Directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, 28 Weeks Later (2007) is the high-tension sequel to Danny Boyle's 28 Days Later. Set six months after the initial outbreak of the Rage Virus has decimated the British Isles, the story follows the U.S. Army as they help secure a small area of London—the Isle of Dogs—for repopulation. However, the attempt to rebuild society is shattered when a carrier of the virus is unknowingly brought into the green zone, leading to a catastrophic resurgence of the infected.

The film is noted for its harrowing opening sequence, its exploration of the ethics of military intervention, and its unrelenting pace. It stars Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Jeremy Renner, and Idris Elba, and is praised for expanding the lore of the franchise while maintaining the visceral horror of the original.

Locations

The production utilized various iconic and industrial locations across London to depict the contrast between the "Safe Zone" and the abandoned, decaying city beyond the barricades.

Canary Wharf & The Isle of Dogs, London

The primary setting for the "District One" safe zone is the Canary Wharf business district on the Isle of Dogs. The sleek, modern skyscrapers of Canada Square provided a futuristic and sterile environment for the repopulation effort, which makes the subsequent chaos and bloodshed within these glass towers even more jarring. Millennium Bridge, London

In a terrifying sequence where the survivors flee the fire-bombed District One, they cross the Millennium Bridge. The bridge’s unique "wobbly" design and its direct line of sight to St. Paul's Cathedral make it a striking location for the frantic escape from the infected and military snipers. Map Location

Charing Cross Underground Station, London

The tense, pitch-black sequence where the characters navigate the London Underground was filmed at the closed Jubilee Line platforms of Charing Cross Station. This location is a favorite for filmmakers due to its authentic "tube" atmosphere and the ability to control the environment for long periods. Map Location

Wembley Stadium, London

The survivors attempt to reach a rescue point at Wembley Stadium. The sight of the massive, empty stadium—especially the iconic arch—serving as a lonely waypoint in a dead city emphasizes the total collapse of British culture and society. Map Location

Regent's Park, London

The exterior scenes of the abandoned London streets and the "Green Zone" border were filmed around the fringes of Regent's Park. The grand terraced houses of Cornwall Terrace provided a hauntingly beautiful backdrop for the military patrols and the silent, empty streets of the capital. Map Location

HMS Belfast, River Thames

The military command and medical facilities seen in the film utilized parts of the HMS Belfast, the historic cruiser moored on the Thames. The ship's cramped, industrial interiors helped establish the utilitarian and high-pressure environment of the U.S. Army's occupation forces. Map Location
